phylum Chordata Megalosaurus is a genus of large meat-eating theropod dinosaurs of the Middle Jurassic period of Europe (Southern England, France, Portugal). It is significant as the first genus of ancient dinosaur to be described and named. For decades after its discovery, Megalosaurus was seen by researchers as the definitive or typical large carnivorous dinosaur. Restriction occurred in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, researchers suggesting that the Stonesfield Slate fossils perhaps belonged to several species of theropod dinosaur.
