From Toy Animal Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search
phylum Arthropoda Termites are eusocial insects classified as infraorder Isoptera, or as epifamily Termitoidae within the cockroach order Blattodea. They evolved from cockroaches during the Jurassic or Triassic. About 3,106 species have been described. Labor is divided among castes of sterile workers and soldiers, and alates, or fertile females called queens, and fertile males called kings. Termites mostly feed on wood, leaf litter, soil and animal dung, digesting the cellulose with the aid of gut protists. Termites are major detritivores, particularly in the subtropical and tropical regions, where their recycling of wood and plant matter is of considerable ecological importance.
