phylum Chordata The Japanese pilchard, Sardinops melanostictus, is a sardine of the Family Clupeidae. It is found in the seas around Japan. It is often described as a subspecies of South American pilchard (Sardinops sagax). It measures up to 24 cm , though the standard length is between 15 and 20 cm. It is one of the most important commercial fishes of Japan.
